Teacher Anita Gildersleeve talks about how her intervention students come to sixth grade struggling with isolating vowel sounds and word parts, which holds them back from reading fluently. As a staff, Icicle River Middle School decided to begin implementing an intervention system that includes REWARDS® (Reading Excellence: Word Attack and Rate Development Strategies) short-term intervention.

At the end of last year and the beginning of this year, my reading level was lower, so I couldn’t get any of the older books that were in the right grade. But now I can, and they don’t have to warn me that I’m getting one that’s going to be hard.
