Training of Trainers (TOT)

DIBELS Next Training of Trainers

DIBELS Next TOT is a 2-day training session (12 instructional hours) for teachers and literacy leaders who meet prerequisite criteria.

Each attendee must:

  1. Have attended a DIBELS Next (6 th Edition) face-to-face initial training session within the two years immediately prior to the TOT session
  2. Be proficient in administering and scoring the measures
  3. Understand science-based reading research for how students acquire foundational reading skills
  4. Be able to effectively present content to adult learners

The TOT session begins with a review of the measures and scoring guidelines. Each participant will take a written assessment related to basic testing rules. Participants will then be organized in triads and will administer and score each measure, alternating between the role of assessor, student, and observer. Using the Accuracy Checklists, the participant will receive a proficiency rating for each measure. Each participant will be given the initial training slides with script notes and will be assigned a part of the training to demonstrate for the class.

A computer lab with internet access (or equivalent) is needed for the training segment on the VPORT data management system and online scoring. Participants are given hands-on practice in how to login and navigate through all of the features in the system, which includes enrolling students, entering scores, and generating reports. Participants explore how to access the measures online and practice scoring. After practicing the online scoring, each participant will demonstrate how to administer online scoring with proficiency.

Training outcomes for the TOT are as follows:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the research and rationale for the DIBELS measures
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in scoring each measure
  3. Demonstrate training a measure, including how to learn the measure, practice scoring, and respond to commonly asked questions
  4. Demonstrate how to navigate in the VPORT data management system to enter scores, generate reports, facilitate online scoring, and disaggregate data to view by school/classroom/student
